May 2024 Teaching & Learning Sessions

Please join us on May 14th for an afternoon of conversation, idea sharing, and, perhaps, a gonged speaker or two!

Registration for all sessions is open through Thursday, May 9th using our online form (registration form). Seating is limited based on room capacity.

Snacks and beverages will be available in the Seacobeck Dome from 1:00-4:00. If you are not attending a session, consider gathering a few friends and enjoying the shade and comfort of the Seacobeck back porch or comfy sofas and puzzles in the Dome Room.

12:00-1:00 Concurrent Sessions

Open House: Adding an Intensive Designation to Your Courses (Seacobeck 139)

Co-Facilitators: Elizabeth Johnson-Young (CE), Melissa Martinez (WI), Adria Goldman (SI), and Swati Agrawal (DI)

Bring your curiosity and questions about adding a CE, WI, SI, and/or DI designation to one of your courses. You will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from each of the four programs to learn more about the designations: learning outcomes, proposal requirements, value of designation to your course, and examples of activities and assignments. If you are unfamiliar with the programs or just need a refresher on the proposal process and ideas for implementation, come join us!

FSEM New Instructor Lunch (Seacobeck 128)

Facilitator: April Wynn

A session for new FSEM instructors to help you get set up for fall. Note: Instructors will be contacted by the Director of the First Year Experience with more information.

1:00-2:15 Concurrent Sessions

Play to Learn: Designing Creative Active-Learning Exercises (Seacobeck 139)

Co-Facilitators: Victoria Russell, Elizabeth Johnson-Young, and special faculty guests

What happens when you take a common game and make it over into a learning-focused exercise? How about increased engagement, community building, and stronger retention of core information–and that’s just for starters! Join us to find out how to turn any common game into a creative, active-learning exercise using the 5 Rs and a little imagination. Come prepared to play!

Breaking Down Boundaries: Critical Thinking Across Areas in the FSEM & Beyond (Seacobeck 151)

CoFacilitators: Adria Goldman, Leah Schweitzer, and April Wynn

Tired of Learning Outcome silos and repetitive work? This workshop offers suggestions for “re-vamping” and “re-pacing” your class to dovetail the assignments, using a cohesive strategy that blends critical thinking, oral communication, and writing to help students better understand topics, evaluate and synthesize information, and present information effectively. Through this workshop, you can take disparate parts of your syllabus/assignments/class activities and make them come together to integrate writing, speaking, research, and critical thinking with one another through multiple assignments over the course of the semester. Leah Schweitzer, April Wynn and Adria Goldman will provide assignment guides, sample rubrics, and feedback maps appropriate for the FSEM that are also easily modifiable to other courses. The hope is this will free up time and energy to lean into learning along with your students and reduce the grading and administrative burden that we know is real.

2:30-3:45 Concurrent Sessions

Practical Ways to Embed Big Interview in Your Courses (Seacobeck 128)

Facilitator: Jennifer Walker

This session will cover practical applications of Big Interview, to include ways to support students with self-reflection, assessment, and demonstration of content knowledge. A step-by-step process of the Big Interview platform will walk participants through creating interviews, creating or selecting questions, and using the platform in a mock interview. In addition, resources such as sample assignments, self-reflection questions, LAMW competency checklists, and rubrics for interviews will be provided.

AI: What’s the Latest (Seacobeck Weatherly Wing)

Co-Facilitators: Jerry Slezak, the AI Working Group, and special guest panelists

Interested in hearing the latest information on AI and various uses here at UMW? Join us for a panel of faculty and staff as they discuss teaching experiences, class assignments, workplace uses, and more. We will also have information to share from the AI Survey that was completed in March, as well as other ways you can continue to engage on this topic.

4:00-5:00 Session

5 Minutes of Fame (Seacobeck Weatherly Wing)

Co-Facilitators: Jerry Slezak, Shannon Hauser, Cartland Berge

Ready for some shorter presentations? Five Minutes of Fame is the answer! Watch our participants make 5-minute presentations about an interesting teaching and learning strategy, a new project they worked on, or a new process they implemented this academic year. Since we all know how difficult it can be for some of us to limit ourselves to 5 minutes, we’ll have a gong on hand to remind presenters that their time is up!

5:00-6:30 Happy Hour and End-of-Year Celebration

Location: Seacobeck Dome Room and back porch

Sponsored by Digital Learning Support

After an afternoon of discussion and laughter, let’s celebrate the end of the academic year with drinks, snacks, and socializing in the Seacobeck Dome Room and on the back porch.
